The whitefly pest, that wrecked Punjab’s cotton harvest last year, is spreading fast in the fields of Abohar and Fazilka.Farmers of the region told additional chief secretary Dr Nirmaljit Singh Kalsi, who visited the area on Sunday, that the attack had spread and that if control measures were not taken, it could cause another disaster like last year.Experts in the agriculture department are hoping for good rains that will help control the pest.We have asked farmers to spray neem-based pesticides till July 15. If the attack is still not reducing, then they can go by the recommendations of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU),” said Dr Jasbir Singh Bains, director, agriculture. “However, we are hopeful that the attack will not be as destructive as last year as our department has been on its toes since the start of the sowing season this year.
