In a move that would help farmers in Thuraiyur belt, the Tiruchi Marketing Committee has decided to conduct weekly auctions of cotton and small onions at the Thuraiyur Regulated Market in the district from this month to help farmers get remunerative prices for their produce without having to pay commission to middlemen. Collector K.Rajamani has announced that the indirect auction of cotton would commence on December 20 and would be held every Wednesday subsequently. Auction of small onions would be held on Thursdays, commencing December 21, he said.Cotton and small onions are widely raised in the Thuraiyur belt in the district. They are also the major crops in neighbouring Perambalur district. Good remunerative price Mr. Rajamani said that auction would help farmers fetch good remunerative prices for their produce. They need not pay any commission for the sale. Local and out station buyers would participate in the auction.He appealed to the farmers to ensure that their produce was clean and dry so as to command good prices.According to sources in the Tiruchi Marketing Committee auction of small onions had been conducted at the Thuraiyur Regulated Market some years back. Now, steps have been taken to raise awareness by holding meetings among farmers in the villages about the facility at the market, the sources said.
