The second week of the state assembly session here started on a stormy note with the opposition once again targeting the ruling alliance over farmers' issues, and forcing adjournment of the house for 10 minutes. Even some ruling party legislators from Vidarbha, like Ramtek MLA Mallikarjun Reddy and Sudhir Parwe, joined the protests against the BJP-Shiv Sena government for its failure to announce a relief package for cotton farmers whose crop was hit by pink bollworm. Despite agriculture minister Pandurang Phundkar's assurances that a joint meeting of all legislators from the affected districts of Vidarbha region would be convened to discuss the issue, the agitating members led by deputy leader of opposition Vijay Wadettiwar trooped into the well and shouted slogans. They were demanding declaration of drought in such areas, and Rs 10,000 per acre compensation to the distressed cotton farmers.
