Cotton was auctioned for Rs. 1.80 crore at the Vazhappadi branch of the Salem District Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society near here recently. The farm produce was auctioned in the society once a week on Wednesdays during the Tamil months from Margazhi to Panguni. With the commencement of the cotton harvest season, a large number of farmers from Salem, Namakkkal, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Dharmapuri had brought cotton stock for the auction. More than 100 traders and representatives of cotton mills procured the cotton. While the �RCH� variety fetch a price between Rs. Rs. 4,989 and Rs. 5,599 per quintal, the DCH variety fetched a price between Rs. 6,559 and Rs. 7,171 per quintal. A total of 7,500 bags of cotton was auctioned for Rs. 1.50 crore, the society sources said. The farmers said that there was a good crop this season after two years. The farmers even from far away districts preferred Vazhappadi society, as they get the money instantly. A section of the traders said that it was the availability of superior quality cotton which attracted a large number of traders and representatives of cotton mills to the Vazhappadi society.
