The government has no plans to give loan waivers to farmers as of now, Agriculture Secretary Shobhana K. Patnaik said today. Instead of giving loan waivers, the government is focusing on imparting skill development training to stakeholders associated with agriculture and allied sector, he said. The farm ministry today signed a memorandum of understanding with skill development and entrepreneurship ministry to train youth for jobs in agriculture and related sector. "Skill development training programmes would be conducted on a regular basis at Krishi Vigyan Kendra," Farm Minister Radha Mohan Singh said today, adding that such programmes currently underway will also be expedited. While some states, including Uttar Pradesh, have waived off farm loans in recent years, farmers in other states such as Maharashtra are also seeking similar sops. However, the central government has said in the past also said it would not bring any scheme on loan waiver on its own.
