Damascus, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Farmers in the north-eastern Syrian province of Hassaka have started collecting cotton, whose expected production will reach 16,000 tons this year, according to official data. The head of the Provincial Department of Plant Production, Rajab Salameh, informed that this figure includes the cultivated area of ​​5,565 hectares and will exceed that achieved in the year 2107, when it reached 5,000 tons. Cotton, wheat and sugar beet are considered strategic products that the Syrian government subsidizes due to its importance for food and the textile industry, among others. Before the war imposed in Syria, managed to achieve seven million tons of wheat, 1.5 million of cotton and 1.300 000 of sugar beet. Production declined markedly during the first years of the war, but in the last two years and thanks to the achievements in the Syrian Army field, production began to increase gradually.
