This afternoon, Friday, January 25, President Donald Trump announced in a televised speech that a “common sense compromise” deal was reached to end the government shutdown, which as gone on for a record 35 days. The funding bill is only good for 3 weeks with an end date of February 15.In his speech, the President assured government worke that they would receive their back paychecks “very quickly or as soon as possible.”The House and Senate unanimously passed the bill on Friday evening to fund the government through Feb. 15. Authorization will move forward for a Department of Homeland Security funding bill for the rest of the fiscal year, where border security funds can be negotiated on a bipartisan basis. The bills now heads to Trump’s desk.The president’s signature would bring to a close the longest government shutdown in history.
