Apr 2, 2019 – Bathinda - The district administration has made temporary arrangements for wheat procurement at the cotton market as the repair work is going on at the local grain market. Notably, the wheat procurement season in the state began on Monday. It is learnt that due to a prolonged cold season, the harvesting of the wheat crop is expected to be delayed. The wheat crop is yet to mature at various places in the region and it will start coming to the grain market by April 15. It is believed the repair work will take 2-3 months to complete. The crop, which turns golden on maturing, is still standing a bit green in some parts of the Malwa region. Agriculture experts believe that the harvesting of the wheat crop has been delayed due to prolonged cold weather in the region. They are hopeful harvesting will start by the next week. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Praneet Bhardwaj said, “All arrangements for wheat procurement have been in place. It will take some time in wheat harvesting in the region. We are expecting the crop to start reaching the grain market by April 10. Till then, the repair work of the floor at the grain market will be over.” The DC said he had held a meeting with officials of five procurement agencies and they started procurement from April 1. He said tenders for transportation and gunny bags (bardana) had already been allotted. The DC added that payment to the farmers would be made on time and the MSP for wheat crop had been fixed at Rs1,840 this year, which was Rs105 more as compared to last year. There are 178 mandis in the district, but the cleanliness measures at grain markets are in bad shape. Garbage can be seen lying unattended at mandis.
